Bizzy bee…

I was at the park yesterday, enjoying a nice moment with Nature. The setting was perfect — sun piercingly bright just before setting, a serene pond with birds of all kinds gliding across the still waters, an island with a rustic Asian-style gazebo.

I strode up a hill overlooking the scenery. There was one spot where the grass hadn’t been mowed, and billions of small white flowers graced the hill’s crown.

Plopping myself right down, I just let go of any thoughts or cares or worries I had, and appreciated. In a few moments, my eyes relaxed and started seeing the full scene, rather than focusing on any one part.

I realized that amongst the bazillions of flowers, were bazillions of honey-bees, gathering the last bits of nectar before hibernating for the winter. I used to be afraid of bees, but have grown to appreciate honey bees. So rather than be alarmed, I enjoyed their busy buzziness.

For some reason, one bee caught my eye, and I started watching it. It landed on a flower bud that hadn’t yet opened. Finding no nectar, it moved on… to another closed bud. Then another. And another. I looked at the other bees. They seemed to be finding the open flowers, no problem. But for some reason, this bee was intent on finding nectar in flowers that had none.

I thought how often I feel like that bizzy buzzing bee, going about my work, bizzily, but finding only flowers that are closed. Knocking on doors that are closed. Walking down paths that are dead ends. I find that this happens more often when I go after what I want, without asking the right questions. Without tuning in to my intuition. Going against the flow of life. Being too BIZZY, to pay attention to the bazillions of opportunities all around me.

This is not always the case. But this was a great reminder to not let life be unadulterated bizziness. Remember to focus. To tune in. To open up. Flow with the rhythms of life. And to be glad that we’re surrounded by others who are doing it.

You cannot force a blossom to open just because you want it to. If you do, you will spoil the beauty inside.
